Here in my car

If somebody would have told me ten years ago that I would like to work on and restore old cars I would have laughed at them. That all changed shortly after I bought my first car, a vintage mustang. Somewhere during the six hour ride home I decided that I wanted to know everything there was to know about this car and how to work on her, that way I would not have to trust some stranger to work on my car.
I started off small. First thing I learned how to do was to change the oil and check on all my fluids (transmission oil, engine coolant, etc.). This was all fun and kind of exciting, I was learning how to take care of my own car. Then the problems got a little more serious; I had to replace a few engine gaskets to stop oil from leaking out of the engine, then the exhaust pipes started leaking, and the carburetor was not working right. It was not long after that I decided to take the plunge and rebuild the engine.
A few friends at work had agreed to show me everything I would need to know to do the job right. Everyday, during smoke breaks, we would discuss what would need to be done next and then I would go home in the evening and spend a few hours doing what we had talked about. It was a slow process but along the way I was learning. I was learning how to clean up/restore old parts and how everything inside the car works.
We knew the rebuild was a success when the car started up with only a few minor problems however, I did not realize how much I had learned until a few years later when a friend approached me about helping him rebuild his car. I sometimes wonder what I would be doing with my spare time if I had not learned about cars. I do know that restoring old cars is better than what I was doing with my spare time, watching movies and sitting around the house.
