            The Eternal Clock of Life
             "... Tick-tock, seven o' clock, time to get up, time to get up, seven o' clock" (Bradbury 1057)! The first form of telling the time used the sun to function-these were used before 1000 BC (Bailey 2). For over three thousand years we have relied on the sun or a battery operated way to measure time. Human's lives are dictated and revolve around the clock.
             There are more reasons why the clock was invented then to just tell time. Some believe that that one of the first mechanical clocks was invented in Italy by a monk to call people in to worship (Bailey 2). These clocks where placed inside the church usually in the belfry and there was no hands on it to indicate time it was only there to ring in the hours and call people to worship (Bailey2).
             Humans tend to set a tight schedule and without a clock to tell time many people would be late for important occasions. For example you go to college till three o' clock but you have a business meeting at five o' clock. Of course you want to be a little early so you don't miss it so you plan to get there ten minutes early. Without a clock you would not know how long to wait after three o' clock before heading to your meeting. Previous to 1283 people could not accurately tell time they had to rely on what is called water clocks. Water clocks are an apparatus that contains simple attachments that would fall or create a noise at the top of the hours (Usher 188). These primitive forms of clocks were highly unreliable and therefore caused them to be a little late and allowed them to come and go as they please. The first mechanical clock consisted of pullies that at certain times would signal a clock tower man to ring the bells to sound the hour (Usher 194).
