Most masters of Reiki use a specific terminology about it.
             They say that Reiki is an alternative, naturalistic and beyond all secure
             therapeutic method, that cures the mind, the body and the spirit by the
             transmission of vital energy. That sounds Chinese, Reiki cannot have a specific definition because it is too broad by itself. For example you can use it to cure your headache, to have protection, to quit a bad habit, to have inner strength you can use it everywhere.
             The word reiki is a combination of two Japanese words, and guess?
             Again with no specific definition or translation. REI can mean spirit, or
             the universal mind. KI is the vital energy. So reiki as one word can mean
             universal life force energy. The energy of life that comes from the
             universe and cures everything negative around us.
             But how reiki begin. The story or the myth if you want, says that reiki
             started or actually restarted in the end of the 19th century, in Kyoto,
             Japan by Dr. Usui. Dr. Usui was a Japanese professor of theology. One
             day a student of Usui asked him, what kind of therapy Jesus and the
             saints were using, and why there isn't anything about it in the bible. Usui
             was shocked by this question, he gave up theology and devoted his life to
             find the answer. He studies, he takes a PHD on the religions, but nothing
             he just discovered that Jesus and Buddha was curing people with their
             hands. After a while a monk tells him that he will only find what he wants
             if he looks inside him. Usui went to the mountain Kourigiama. He
             passed 21difficult days of meditation and fasting. After 21 days he
             decides to live because nothing happened. Suddenly a ball of light
             came and hit him in the forehead. He felt down, he opened his eyes and
             saw colored bubbles and inside them were the symbols of Reiki. At this
