Some people choose to practice Hinduism, and others Islam. Some people choose to be Jewish and some choose Atheism. Some people choose to be Christian while others choose to be agnostic. With America's population becoming more and more diverse by the day, heated arguments have risen about the interpretation of the First Amendment, in particular the section about freedom of religion. In the backdrop of almost every argument about this topic is should the amendment be interpreted "freedom of religion" or "freedom of or from religion". Many people, some Christians (myself included), say that it should be interpreted the later of those two ways.
From looking at the past and the importance of religion in this country, you can assume that the authors of the Constitution meant the amendment just as it was written, freedom of religion. When the Bills of Rights were drawn up there wasn't as much diversity in America as there is now. "Freedom of religion" was an adequate way to state the phrase. The Europeans coming to America came to escape persecution for their religious beliefs, not their lack of religious beliefs. Those that came over in the beginning were of some form of Christianity. From the Puritans to the Pilgrims, and the Roman Catholics to the Protestants, they all came from the same background. America became a safe haven for religious immigrants.
As the Industrial Revolution was going on, America saw a substantial increase in immigration. People from many different countries and cultures were making their way to America. Each came with their own beliefs. We were labeled the land of tolerance and religious freedom. Immigration has only increased since then.
