             Wider Reading Assignment, Comparing a pre 1914 Piece of Literature - Frankenstein and a post 1914 Piece of Literature - Carrie. With the Link of; 'Social Outcasts'
             I chose to compare these two books as I feel that there is a strong link between them. Both Frankenstein and Carrie are associated with the theme of social outcasts. Even though the books were written at very different times, the theme comes across just as strongly and effectively in both books.
             Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is based around the idea of 'man as a creator'. A kind of godly power betrayed upon one being. This is conveyed throughout the book, whereas Stephen King's Carrie is based around the idea of a natural born girl who has been gifted with the art form of telekinesis.
             Both books are of a similar genre - horror. However in my own opinion, I think that Frankenstein would have had a greater mental effect on its first readers than Carrie had because of the time of it's release, even though Carrie deals with much more horrifying and shocking issues. Frankenstein was the first book of its kind, therefore people weren't used to such ideas being expressed in a book (that man could resemble god by being a creator), whereas Carrie was released a lot later, there had been many horror books in the past which promoted this thought, but none such as effective as Carrie for a long time.
             Frankenstein was first anonymously published in 1818. It is believed that Mary Shelley came up with the idea of Frankenstein from a nightmare she had. The story is based on the creation of a monster that seeks revenge on his inventor due to the fact that he has become an outcast from society.
             The book starts off with a young Swiss student who discovers his love for bringing the dead back to life by assembling bodies together. He locks himself away from the world until he has finally finished his creation. He creates a monst...
