The Echoed Story

Love, this little four letter word can cause any person to completely lose their mind in a matter of weeks. Without it, life on this earth would no longer be worth living, but with it some people wonder why they put up with it. In Tennessee William's A Streetcar Named Desire, love is one of the most overpowering elements of the story. Though, throughout the story the minor characters, Steve and Eunice Hubbel, plot lines are quite parallel to the plot of the major characters, Stella and Stanley Kowlalski, which in the end reinforces the theme that love prevails against all opposing elements.
The relationship that each couple has with it their own set of action that takes place to under score the theme. The first horrible scene that truly tests the strength of Stella and Stanley's relationship is the poker scene. "[He (Stanley) advances and disappears. There is a sound of a blow. Stella cries out.]".(pg. 57) Stanley goes into an outrageous fit with his friends around and hits his pregnant wife Stella. This incident is almost mirrored by the Hubbel's one day. Eunice confronts Steve about his blonde friend down at the Four Deuces. Soon a fight can be heard from Stella and Stanley's apartment. "You hit me! I'm gonna call the police."(pg. 75) Eunice is heard yelling as she goes down the stairs and outside yelling for the police. Then in the same Fashion that Stanley approached Stella, Steve chases after Eunice. "[He looks around the corner a bit timidly, then turns with affected boldness and runs after her.]"(pg.76) Both women do return to their husbands even after all the fighting and hitting has been done. By Stella returning to him it proves that she truly loves Stanley and that can bee seen throughout the most of the play. "I'm not in anything I want to get out of."(Williams, Tennessee. A Streetcar Named Desire. New York: Penguin books, 1947. pg
