Cameras are following the same evolutionary path as the progress of vinyl records to cassettes to CDs and VHS to DVDs. Over the past few years, great advances in technology have allowed for the digitalization of communication, entertainment and photography. Digital cameras are quickly replacing traditional film cameras in North America.
             Digital cameras are improving in quality and decreasing in cost making them more popular for everyone. Early digital cameras had grainy images and were too expensive for the average buyer. Increased demand and competition amongst sellers has led to lower prices and a large variety of sizes, styles and features to suit the market.
             The transfer of information electronically supports the trend towards the digitalization of media. One hour photo is a thing of the past when you don't even have to leave home for digital. Pictures are uploaded almost instantly onto computers where they can be cropped, edited, rotated and enhanced. Families and friends can send pictures around the world with ease over the web. Photo kiosks have been created to suit the purpose of converting film pictures onto CDs for sharing.
             One of the disadvantages to digitally stored pictures is the cost of printing and the lack of hard copies to share in an album. This will hopefully be overcome in the future by less expensive photo paper and cheaper printers. On the other hand, a digital camera user can take hundreds of pictures without worrying about film cost. The memory card which stores the images is infinitely reusable and provides 2-10 times the storage compared to a roll of film. Photos can immediately be reviewed after being taken and unwanted or poorly taken ones can be deleted without having to wait for the pictures to be developed.
