The unicorn is unlike any of the other glass figurines that Laura has. The unicorn with its single horn in the middle of its forehead represents Laura with her disability. She thinks that she is the only one that has to wear braces on her legs. To her she is singled out by the difference. Others in the world are represented by the common horse's in her collection. Because of this she retreats to a world of her own with glass figurines. Laura the dreamer is represented by the unicorn in Tennessee Williams play The Glass Menagerie.
             Laura is scared of the outside world and very self conscious because of the braces on her legs which cause her to limp. She uses this as an excuse to stay in the apartment. Because of her mothers love she is able to see past the defect and wants Laura to be everything that she was. While Laura worries what others think of her, her mother is constantly pushing the real world on her. When Laura was in high school she was able to go home and retreat into her world. This condition is escalated when she has to walk into choir class and her brace "clumped" very loud. She just knew that everyone noticed her, when in fact the boy that she most admired did not ever notice that she had any defect. Even though he tells her that he never noticed she admits to him that to her it sounded like "thunder"
             Amanda does not except that her daughter's condition hold her back from the normal things in life; she wants Laura to be a real part of society. She pushes her into the real world of business college which Laura has a hard time dealing with. Laura could not handle the pressure of class and her nerves because of the people around her. Because of her nerves Laura got sick in the front of her class and she feels that she can no longer face anyone in class again because of her embarrassment.
