Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman contains many hidden concepts about the American society. The play describes the American society through the point of views of an average American family, the Lomans. By using this family Miller is able to establish one of the main themes of his play; the fact that the American society is unethical and flawed.
             The Lomans are shaped to look like an average American family. By giving this feeling to the reader of the play, Miller is able to assert that many American families are similar to the Lomans. They seem to be a perfect family when seen by an outsider, but as the story progresses, their flaws become quite evident. Willy Loman, a salesman, travels through different cities selling his company's products to customers. He even claimed that being a salesman was the greatest job there is when he said, "And when I saw that, I realized that selling was the greatest career a man could want. 'Cause what could be more satisfying than to be able to go, at the age of eighty-four, into twenty or thirty different cities, and pick up a phone, and be remembered and loved and helped by so many different people?" In spite of saying this, Willy is revealed to be unsatisfied with his life. He cheated on his wife during his business trips, and he attempted suicide multiple times. Miller is able to show how an average business man of the American society lives his life in a way that makes the American standards seem to be trivial.
             Next comes Biff Loman, Willy's son. In the beginning, Biff is described as a perfect son and star football player. Willy loved his son so much that even when he stole a football from his school, he praised him for his initiative. However, when Biff decides not to become a businessman as his father had wanted, Willy's attitude towards him quickly changes.
