Beowulf

             The notable pagan epic Beowulf reflects the rich Germanic oral tradition of myths, legends, and folklore that makes this literary piece honorable. The Beowulf epic is an adventurous story that has many appealing characters, incorporates the psychological aspects of human behavior, and exhibits a mature appreciation of the transitory nature and human beings and achievement. The heroic epic Beowulf disputably written in the 11th century and yet it still has themes of contemporary ideals. These modern ideals include the acts of heroism, morality, and fulfillment. The values of society, the questionable events, and the heroic attributes of the characters make this heroic epic a literary masterpiece.
             The elements presented within Beowulf that teach us the values of the Germanic society are strength, courage, hospitality, generosity, political skills, and loyalty in warriors. Strength was a major aspect of present-day Sweden, because during that specific time period countries were ravished with war. The people within their society admired this heroic characteristic because is symbolized bravery and pride. For example, young Beowulf heard a tale that a giant named Grendel was terrorizing King Hrothgar's mead hall and killing his warriors profusely. So, Beowulf and fourteen of his strong-willed warriors sailed over to help the Dane-Folks put an end to this catastrophe. Beowulf ended the brutal killings by slaying Grendel and his fierce mother. While Beowulf reigned as king for fifty years, his last heroic deed was the slaying the fire serpent that wreaked havoc on his homeland. The dragon's death lead to his demise for the sake to compromise the security of his people. Beowulf's determination and pride showed his valor and vigor as a king and a warrior amongst his society.
