             Sergeant Nettles was a very motivated man while being even more motivating to his men. He motivates all of his men as much as he can, especially Gideon. One time he challenges Jimbo to think of himself as a soldier. "..."I stood right there in the parlor like I was a white officer come, and not just a nigger." Nettles' eyes snapped. "You are not just a nigger. You are a soldier, and don't you forget it!"" (193). I feel that every time Nettles would remind one of his men of that he was also reminding himself of that fact and trying very hard to convince himself that he was a soldier.
