Narration in "A Rose For Emily"

William Faulkner's classic short story "A Rose For Emily" is a tale of the life of a southern belle named Emily Grierson. Emily grew up in a time between the time of the age of aristocracy and the time of "the next generation, with its modern ideas"(Faulkner, 2054). The story of Emily's tragic and shocking story is relayed to the readers through an anonymous narrator. The narrator speaks on behalf of the town's people using the pronoun "we" quite frequently throughout the entire story.              "...only a woman could have believed it" (2054), "A neighbor, a woman, complained..."(2055), " "just as if a man-any man-could keep a kitchen properly" the ladies said" are all examples of how the narrator always refers to them women as a different group, one that he is not part of. Nowhere in the story doe...
