             Satoris's attempt in inventing the story of her deceased father's remittance of taxes. Once again, the view of Emily being a "lady" has allowed her to escape any obligations she holds to the town.
             After receiving knowledge of her father's death, and realizing Emily has been left with only her house, the townspeople begin to feel as if she has become closer to their level. Even still, they regard her as an obligation to the town because of her lady-like customs. The town believes she is unable to fend for herself.
