Why We Crave Horror Movies

             In the essay "Why We Crave Horror Movies" by Stephen King the author is explaining why he feels people watch and enjoy horror movies. He says that part of the reason is to show that we can and to prove that we are not afraid. We are daring ourselves and our nightmares. He explains that a horror movie can bring fun and gets our adrenaline going. The author compares a horror movie to a roller coaster ride saying that
             "a really good horror movie may not surprise a scream out of us at some point, the way we may scream when a roller coaster twists through a complete 360..." (pg 456) He says like a roller coaster, a horror movie has always been a special province of the young. However, when on a roller coaster ride, you have to wait until the ride is finished. With a horror movie, if you get too scared you have the luxury of being able to turn the movie off (as I often do), or leaving the theatre.
             I think that horror movies are more than just a roller coaster ride. I think they are an adventure. A way to release ourselves, or as the author puts it "we are told we may allow our emotions to rein free." (pg 457) Horror films are a good way for people to "reestablish their feelings of essential normality." I have always been one who enjoys a good horror movie. There have been many times after I've watched a good horror movie,
             That I've found myself wondering what was that noise or checking in my closets and under my bed. My friends tell me they get embarrassed going to the movies to see a scary movie with me because I am one of those people who really -let their emotions rein free. A "screamer" as my friends would say.
