Several texts were read and discussed through out the classes and each contained themes and messages that somehow related to each other but were also slightly different in numerous ways. Langston Hughes' "Montage of Dream Deferred" and Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun" are descent literary texts that send out powerful messages yet had theme that is similar yet could be interpret in different ways. I believe both texts were essentially about African-Americans' dream. Both Hughes and Hansberry wanted to express and reveal the struggles of African-Americans to deal with oppressive circumstances that rule their lives while their dreams were continuously being deferred. Based on two literary texts of "Montage of Dream Deferred" and "A Raisin in the Sun," I will examine, analyze, compare, and contrast the theme to explore thoughts and ideas that we have discussed in our class.
The setting of Langston Hughes' poems is in Harlem, New York. In this evocative place that he described, he explores dreams of African-Americans and how they are easily deferred and most of them are ignored and neglected. Langston Hughes speaks of a dream that represents phantom of a mind or a fantasy. A dream that sadly can not be achieved because of person's race, skin color, prejudice, and all injustice situation that creates wall that he/she can not overcome. A wall that is so big and solid that it makes person to give up his/her dream before giving any serious thoughts or effort to achieve it. In his poem, "Theme for English B," he gave readers insight into the thoughts and emotions of the main character, the young "colored" student. The poem starts with, "Go home and write a page tonight.
