as handed down; a case that would prove instrumental in the strategies and ideas that Houston used in years to come. Houston was born to Mary and William Houston- a hairdresser and general practice lawyer- parents, who did everything in their power to afford him the best opportunities. From trips to the zoo, to concerts, and matinee theaters no luxury was too great for their son. If there was anyway that they could get it for him, they did. Among the many advantages and opportunities presented to Charles Houston by his parents was the opportunity to attend M Street High School. M Street High School was the first African American high school in the United States. M Street was the building block for his higher education. His grades and progress at M Street allowed Amherst College to see what kind of student he could be. He was offered a partial scholarship to Amherst College and on September 13, 1911 he begin his journey to Amherst in Massachusetts. Although not the full scholarship hoped for, his parents did what they could on their meager income to make up the difference.
Upon graduation from Amherst, Houston took a position as the teacher of English and Negro Literature at Howard University. Being of draft age, and not wanting to be on the front lines of the war, Houston enrolled in the first black military officer training school. The many hardships he endured because of his race pushed him towards a career in law. In one of many letters Charles Hamilton Houston wrote:" I made up my mind that I would never get caught again without knowing my rights; that if luck was with me, and I got through this war, I would study law and use my time fighting for men who could not strike back."
