             The Jefferson's was also used as an outlet to convey the changes taking place in society as a result of the Civil Rights Movement. Consequently, blacks began to interact with whites on television as indication that the struggle for racial equality was generating change. One of the first reasons for the longevity of The Jefferson's on primetime television was of course the fact that an African American played the leading role since the show Amos and Andy, which was cancelled in 1953. It also featured ethnic humor, which was popular at the time. The show also featured confrontational humor, which was also held the audiences interest due to the social happenings at the time. Aside from catering to the African American community, this show also contributed to an improved representation of the black family, which included a mother, father and the children. Thus, this employed the ideas that not only could African Americans be successful but that could also acquaint with whites as human beings instead of employers.
             Although "The Jefferson's was a hit there were still those who had negative criticism about the show. Critics and viewers commented on the shows stereotypical ways. One example is the character of Louise also known as "Weezy", who embodied the depiction of a "mammy" whom was usually dark-skinned and heavy set, like Louise. They exaggeratedly embellish her face with make-up so to purposely make her look hideous. Not only was louse considered a stereotypical character but also George Jefferson was criticized as well for being one. Viewers and critics considered him a buffoon. His character was indubitably silly, loud talking, boisterous and received no respect, not even from the housekeeper. Therefore, are we laughing at George Jefferson, or are we laughing at the mockery that is being made.
