Treachery is defined by the willful betrayal of trust or fidelity. In William Shakespeare's King Lear, Goneril, the eldest of Lear's daughters, become jealous, ruthless, and amoral. With Lear's foolish pride Goneril and her sister Regan have the ability to rule over Britain. "We must do something and I'th' heat" (26). Goneril's passion and desire to obtain her country began the moment she declared her love to her father and was given the right to her land. With the help of Regan, Oswald, and Edmund, Goneril was able to put up a an aggressive fight. Goneril stated, "I would breed from hence occasions, and I shall, that I may speak" (44).Thus, Goneril's treacherous path extended to her father, the king, her husband Albany, and her sister Regan.
Goneril is known for her disloyalty to her father. Her father was the one who gave her the land in which she intended to challenge his authority. She never respected him she called him "Idle old man" (42), and an "old fool" (42). With such disrespect she conspired and manipulated him with the help of her servant Oswald. She demanded that he reduce his number of troops and only leave the old ones. She also did not want to partake in caring for his well being. She said "hath put himself from rest, and must needs taste his folly" (138). Goneril had the drive to take her father's authority away but in return was contrasted by Kent's loyalty that unveiled the truth.
Even with the betrayal of her father, Goneril's relationship with her husband the Duke of Albany, fell apart after her inheritance. Goneril was a cheating wife who used Albany for status and for power. Goneril had affairs with Oswald and Edmund, which made Albany want revenge on both.
