What women today, in their right minds, waits on their husband every second of the day just to please him. Nobody, I hope! Women are independent, and not fearful of the abuse and mistakes as they were back in the Victorian Era. In the Victorian and Modern versions of the Arthurian legends, Guinevere demonstrates women's role in society. In Tennyson's version of the love affair with Lancelot and Guinevere, the portrayal of a woman's role in society is unlike the role in T.H. White's version where it demonstrates the modern day typical woman and how it has changed through the different time periods.
             Honoring your husband was a significant matter in the Victorian days. Women blamed themselves for all the wrongdoings. Guinevere tells Lancelot, "Mine is the shame, for I was wife, and thou unwedded:"(Tennyson). As her and Lancelot departed from each other, she blamed herself for betraying her husband and didn't want Lancelot to take the responsibility for both of their actions. The Victorian era was a time where women had to abide by their husband, and demonstrated chivalrous actions, but when she betrayed that element, she escaped. She ran off to a nunnery and wanted to remain anonymous, so she begged, "O peaceful sisterhood, receive, and yield me sanctuary, nor ask her name to whom ye yield it, till her time to tell you:"(Tennyson) because Guinevere was so ashamed of her secret relationship with Lancelot. She knew there would be rumors going around such as "she like a new disease, unknown to men, creeps, no precaution used, among the crowd, makes wicked lightning of her eyes, and saps the fealty of our friends, and stirs the pulse with devil's leaps, and poison half the young" (Tennyson).
