At this time more than 90% of the Palestinian population were Arabs and there were no more than 56 000 people in the Palestine area and no more than5% of these were native Palestinian Jews . The Arabs of Palestine owned at that time 97.5% of the land while Jews (native Palestinians and recent immigrants together) owned only 2.5% of the land. 1920 saw the British High Commissioner issue a decree confiscating 3390 square dunams (approx. 848 acres as 4 dunam equals 1 acres) of the Karm Abu Hussein area in Jerusalem .
