John Keating's teaching methods were they appropriate

             Deciding whether or not John Keating's teaching methods were appropriate is difficult. In Peter Weir's film Dead Poets Society he seems to be both knowledgeable and respected at first. Later on he is portrayed as an unfit teacher and even worse the cause of a suicide. Contradiction of the previous statement then occurs. To find out if Mr. Keating was accurate in wanting to establish free thinkers we must examine his methods of teaching and his intentions as well as the overall knowledge of the students. This will not reveal a direct answer but will help establish a greater understanding.
             Welton is against change they do not want it. When Mr.Keating came he changed Welton completely. He gave the boys a chance to be free. Neil was able to try acting for the first time something he had wanted to do for a while but never could. Mr Keating gave him the chance to do it he gave him both confidence and his freedom to choose. If it weren't for Mr. Keating he would have never been able to go against his father and do something he enjoyed so much. Mr. Keating told his class "Ideas can change the world." Creativity is an important aspect it leads to an idea that could affect the whole world such as an invention or some means of technology. That's why it is important to create an idea and use your brain to acquire something extraordinary. Mr. Keating also told the students "You will learn to think for yourselves again." Welton does not allow free thinking it is even told to us when Mr Keating told Nolan that "The purpose of education is to teach people to think for themselves" Nolan replies back "Not and seventeen." Mr. Keating did not agree with Nolan at all student need to be able to be themselves and have opinions how will they ever reach their potential if they are not aloud to have an opinion or go against something they do not believe is right.
