Lentils and lilies

, published in her book Hey yeah Right Get a Life, in year 2000. Women's status and motherhood are the main subjects in this story. Moreover, the story deals with a very basic desire of many teenagers – desire for something more; something beyond routines.
             The protagonist, Jade Beaumont, is an ambitious teenage girl, from a typical suburb. She was currently revising for the A levels which were only few weeks away. Even though she was supposed to read differences between the two romantic poets, Wordsworth and Coleridge, her mind couldn't help stop thinking about the freedom she was going to obtain after been trapped in school for all these years. "Summer. She couldn't wait". (line 14) Jade has her whole future planned, and apparently, it is no more complicated than she is able to think it through in about five minutes. She wants to be a successful woman with a career and wants to live her life with independency. She is on her way to give an interview for a holiday job. While walking down the street, letting the sun embrace her body, which she has already dressed up for the summer that lies ahead, her mind was criticizing the people living in the houses she pass by.
