In the Random House Webster's College Dictionary, the disease known as Alzheimer's is defined as "a common form of dementia of unknown cause, usu. beginning in late middle age, characterized by progressive memory loss and mental deterioration associated with brain damage." It causes the brain to have disorders that affect a person's ability to carry out everyday activities. The name is named after German Dr. Alois Alzheimer who discovered changes in a mental woman 's brain tissue after her death. Scientists are learning more and more about AD everyday because it is killing thousands of elderly men and women each year. "There probably is not one single cause, but several factors that affect each person differently:" age and family history.
             AD knows no race or gender, but it knows age. It claims at least four million American lives each year. Most of the disease occurs in people 65 and older; the risks increase with age. "On average, AD patients live from eight to ten years after they are diagnosed, though the disease can last for as many as twenty years. Although it isn't normal, younger people could also have Alzheimer's Disease. But only around three percent of young people have been diagnosed with having the disease.
             Scientists say there are seven signs that you may have Alzheimer's Disease. The quicker you realize you have the disease, they greater chance you have of not losing all of your memories.
             The first and second warning signs tie into each other-"asking the same question over and over again" and "repeating the same story, word for word, again and again."
