What if? That is a question that runs through everyone's head at one point or another. Should you even bother asking yourself that question if you are never going to the answer, or maybe start planning in advance in case what you want actually comes true. In "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" mostly all of the characters ask "what if?" Every one of them either has material or emotional wants that run across their minds constantly. Out of all the characters Singer was the one who never even questioned his disability or life, he simply accepted everything in life. If he was happy or sad, the only thing he ever wanted was his friend, Antonapoulos.
So what if things would have been different for Singer? Would it make a huge difference in his life? All the other characters in the book knew what they needed to fulfill them. If Mick were wealthy, she could fulfill her dreams playing the piano; she would not be a high school dropout working at Woolworths. Jake Blount needed some money also; just enough to clean him up and get him an honest job. All Jake really wanted was for people to understand his viewpoint, and maybe that would have happened later in his life. For Biff things would have definitely been different if he didn't marry Alice. Singer though, is different. Could one thing really change his life that much?
What if Singer had money? First it would make a huge difference if he was born into wealth or if he somehow stumbled onto it later in life. If Singer was
born into wealth he probably would have gone to better school for his disabilities, therefore making it easier to make more friend's that would understand him better.
