When Parvez and Ali go out to dinner Ali criticizes his father for drinking alcohol and not practicing religion. He gives a speech for his father and tells him the difference between wrong and right: "don't you know it's wrong to drink alcohol? Ali said"(124) or elsewhere he criticizes his father for eating pork "he asked his father if he didn't relish pork pies?"(125).
