In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck begins to make the transformation from boy to man over the course of the novel. The character that seemed to have the most affect on Huck's transformation was Jim. Jim was a slave who had escaped from his master and is attempting to find freedom and purchase the rest of his family from slavery so that they could be reunited. Huck only begins to make the transformation from boy to man because of what he learns in his time with Jim.
             Initially Huck thinks of Jim as a lesser person since he was black, and often plays hurtful and sometimes harmful jokes on him. But, as they spend more time together Huck begins to realize that Jim is human like himself with feelings and thoughts that should be valued.
             Huck's growth first began to evolve when he set Jim up with the rattlesnake. Huck and Jim had come across a rattlesnake skin, and Jim warned Huck that touching rattlesnake skin was usually considered bad luck. Huck dismissed the advice from his friend due to his usual stubbornness, and his pre-conceived notions of intellectual superiority since Jim was black. The fact that the skin coincided with their finding of clothes and eight dollars did nothing to help to change Huck's mind either. "Well here's your bad luck! We've raked in all this truck and eight dollars besides. I wish we could have some bad luck like this everyday, Jim." (Page 62)
             A few days later Huck decided to play a practical joke on Jim. Earlier Huck had killed a rattlesnake and he decided that it would be a funny joke to place the rattlesnake at the foot of Jim's blanket. Huck was hoping that the rattlesnake would just scare Jim, but he forgot to take into account that a rattlesnake's mate usually tries to defend the dead ones carcass.
