armilla making her the dominant force in this story, and I believe that these qualities are ultimately what make Carmilla's character so evil. I think Le Fanu was trying to show, that in Victorian society women were so repressed and held back, that a woman who exhibited signs of independence and intelligence would've been automatically labeled a trouble maker and a threat to the community because of her refusal to adhere to the roles that her gender required her to obey.
