Psychologists Challenge Ethics of Marketing to Children
An Ethnographer would react to this article by saying it is wrong to manipulate children's thoughts for advertising. The reason why, being that children are so easy to manipulate. Easy things such as colors, cool looking pictures, or neat characters will buy their vote right away without them ever even really thinking about what they just choose that they like. When psychologists come into the scene of helping the marketers, and develop marketing schemes to sell to children, an ethnographer could only look at that as sad and degrading to the American morals. Yes the child may like the toy they are playing with and be enjoying it, but in reality, does the child really like the toy? If a child were given a chance to go up to toys they had never seen anything about before, and pick one after examining the rest, it would be the child's true choice.
Having materialistic children in the first place is a bad thing due to the media's exploitation of their minds. Being cool isn't all about "Name Brands" and knowing what is "hip", but choosing things because you like them for your own personal reasons. An ethnographer would look at this whole perspective as a multi-part problem. The parents giving in to the children's wants, the psychologists exploiting their young minds, and the media for abusing their power and changing the decisions of people.
