George Orwell's, "Politics and the English Language"
             In "Politics and the English Language" George Orwell states, "Most people who bother with the matter at all would admit that the English language is in a bad way, but it is generally assumed that we cannot by conscious action do anything about it." Orwell believes the English language has become "ugly and inaccurate". He goes on to say that this is somewhat due to politics. He gives a few examples in which people butcher the English language. Throughout the essay we find Orwell committing the same English mistakes that he is pointing out. It is extremely hard to change our writing habits but with much practice we could improve it.
             Well, reading Orwell's essay I kept thinking that he made a very good point. This is my first year that I will be able to vote and I want to know what exactly it is that I'm voting for. Therefore, I've been reading a lot of political news articles lately. As I'm reading these articles I find them dull and bland. After reading a few articles I had come to the conclusion that maybe politics were not for me. That perhaps, politics were just too boring. It was after reading Orwell's essay that I started thinking, "Well, maybe it is the writers' fault. It's possible that politics are quite interesting and it is politicians and their writers that make them uninteresting.
             However, I believe that this does not only apply to politics. I believe that it applies to every kind of writing. It's true. You can't find many "good writers" these days. You really can't. A lot of people just have a hard time grouping their word and ideas together. As do I. Perhaps, we should not think so much about what to write and instead just let it flow out.
