From having been an assurance of immortality, it becomes the uncanny harbinger of death' (Freud, p219). Furthermore there is thought to be a patent association between psychoanalysis (particularly dream interpretation) and the interpretation of fiction, sharing certain concerns and of interpretation such as discourse and narrative, meaning and hermeneutic method, symbolism and stylistic deviation. Extremely important is the pre-eminence of the unconscious to theories of creativity and culture, including the relationship between the artist and the work, the psyche and the creations of its sublimation. Therefore the fact that the play involves wax figures, mirror images, severed heads and spirits and ghosts could be considered as expressions of an anxiety about the self, death and castration. Freud states that
