With orders to terrorize the terrorists, they embarked on a vigilant crusade to crush the IRA. The height of the Anglo-Irish war came on November 21, 1920, when in retaliation for the IRA killing of fourteen English soldiers, the RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) fired into a crowd at a soccer match, killing twelve civilians. The day would come to be known as Bloody Sunday and its significance is deeply rooted in the Irish Republic's history. In eighteen months between 1919-1921 nearly seven hundred IRA volunteers, seven hundred civilians and five hundred English soldiers were killed. Had the actors known that these numbers would climb sharply for the remainder of the twentieth century, their approach to a resolution may have been different.
