College Campuses and Binge Drinking

             On many college campuses, kids spend most of their time drinking heavily. This is known as Binge Drinking. " Men who consume more than five or more drinks in one sitting, and women who consume four or more drinks in one sitting, one of more times within a two – week period are classified as binge drinkers."(1) Since binge drinking is so popular on college campuses, I have chosen to research binge drinking to find out who on college campuses and why they choose to do it and the dangers and the effects they receive from it.
             Students across the United States have been researched on the topic of Binge Drinking, and statuses show that up to seventy percent are binge drinkers. Around fifty-one percent of men in college will drink five or more drinks in a row, and forty percent of women will drink four or more drinks in a row. Students that are more likely to be binge drinkers are white, involved in athletics, age twenty-three or younger, and are residents of a fraternity or a sorority. White students are twice as likely to be binge drinkers and tend to be in the age group of twenty-three and younger. Many students that are athletes in college that say the sports are important were almost one and a half times more likely to be binge drinkers; where as residents of college fraternities and sororities are four times as likely to be binge drinkers compared to other student activities on campus. Although this sounds like a serious problem, binge drinking among young people is declining and is doing so for many years.
             Many of us wonder why so many college students binge drink. Some of the top three reasons people give for exposing themselves to binge drinking are drinking to have a good time, drinking to get drunk, and drinking to celebrate. Other reasons are peer pressure from academic stress, the culture of alcohol consumption on campuses, and statuses associated with drinking.
