In Gish Jen's novel, Typical American, the main character, Ralph Chang, experiences difficulties in his attempt to assimilate into American society because of his Chinese values. Throughout the novel, Jen uses Ralph's switch between both American and Chinese culinary dishes to represent the fact that although he does become intrigued with the novelty and economic opportunity that American fare stands for, he always returns, and not always willingly, to the comfort and tradition that Chinese victuals embody. Thus, through the use of food, Jen illustrates a clash between both American and Chinese cultures and demonstrates that despite an individual's ambition to assimilate into a culture that will give vast economic opportunities and fulfill desires, true satisfaction lies within each individual's cultural heritage.
             Upon Ralph's arrival in America, food plays a significant role in helping him maintain the level of comfort and satisfaction that he always knew in China. As "his classmates organiz[e] a cooperative cooking program, [...] Ralph practice[e]s up, to be sure he'[ll] be able to participate" (Jen 14). Through this interaction with other Chinese students, Ralph seeks to become part of an effort in keeping his Chinese culture. The connotation given by the words, "cooperative" and "program" denote the emotional stability and ease found at this point in Ralph's life. For indeed, nothing in Ralph's life finds itself in disarray at this particular moment; all of his plans, both educational and personal, develop just as he plans them. The word "cooperative" also symbolizes emotional satisfaction present in Ralph's life, for being an active participant of the cooperative allows him the opportunity to placate the nostalgia he feels in having left his family and country.
