It seemed as though the water washing away Delmar's sins was like hydrogen peroxide on an open wound, in which the liquid was cleaning the wound of infection. The river, like the hydrogen peroxide, ultimately cleaned Delmar of his sins that were infectious to his soul. When he was pulled up from the water, he had a look on his face like he had just gone through a life changing experience. Pete shouts, "Delmars been saved" (O Brother.) As Delmar starts to stumble out of the water thinking he is a new man shouts, "The preacher done washed away all my sins... neither god nor man had got nothing on me... come on in boys, the water is fine" (O Brother.)
