Television is a powerful medium – can it be used for good?
             Gilmore Girls. SpongeBob. 24. The OC. Pokemon. The Real World. Sex & the City. Are these cartoons, sitcoms and dramas becoming the teachers of our children?
             Nowadays, in a world where parents spend less time with their children, the answer seems to be YES. TV has become the "third parent" for our kids, and this is something we should start to worry about. Most of the teenagers and kids get most of their values, ideas and principles from this "box" where all that is shown is sex, drugs and violence.
             TV is mainly the cause of why kids are shooting their friends at school, teenagers are growing more violent and sports are being abandoned.
             Despite the actual tendency of the TV to be a way for producers to get rich, (where all the programs are sold by showing violence, drugs and sex) there are ways in which TV could be used for good. For example, there are educational and good entertainment programs. Also, it's up to us what we and our kids watch, and TV takes education where no one else would.
             In a world full of stress, where people are always busy, the time that the parents spend raising their children and having conversations with them is minimum. Kids are now being raised alone in their houses, receiving a lot of this information by what they watch on TV. The lectures of values, things that are important in life are being taught by TV. As an example, I was raised watching different types of cartoons that shaped my childhood and that of my friends. A lot of what we talk about and what we think, we learned from TV. The same thing has happened to my brother and his friends and I can say that our thoughts and beliefs are totally different. Here we realize the importance of TV, because in a way the TV shapes a person; it can set your behaviors and attitudes.
