In this book Odysseus is retelling his trip home as a flashback. He is telling journey sailing home. As the book begins it tells of his travels and where he winds up during this time. At first Odysseus seems very concerned for the well being of his crew and he looks out for them and makes sure no one is left behind. As the story goes on though he begins to be more concerned with himself then his crew. He winds up bringing bad luck against the rest of his journey by succumbing to his own hubris.
             Odysseus and his men, first, landed on the coast of the Kikones, there they stormed the coast and killed the men who fought and made the women their slaves. The men killed sheep after sheep upon the shore and felt no remorse. Odysseus knew what they were doing was wrong and begged the men to go back to the ships and leave the land, but they refused. The men became greedy. The fugitives left on the land ran back to tell the army of Kikones and soon they were taking Odysseus and his men by storm. Odysseus says, "So doom appeared to us, dark word of Zeus for us, our evil days." (IX, 56) During the battle Odysseus lost six men per ship. Odysseus was clearly affected by the death of his friends. He said "no ship made sail next day until some shipmate had raised a cry, three times, for each poor ghost unfleshed by the Kikones on that field." (XI, 69). The whole time on the island Odysseus was worried about his men, he had a feeling that what they were doing was going to prove disastrous and when it did he fought along side his men. He exclaimed that when they sailed off the next morning there was a new grief each of them held, they may have their lives, but they lost the lives of many of their friends.
