Black veil

             The story is set in an assumedly Puritan community in the seventeenth century. The story details events surrounding one Reverend Hooper, after he suddenly and mysteriously begins wearing a veil of black crepe over his face, covering his eyes and nose.
             The reverend assumes the black veil before the day's church meeting. After which, he proceeds to officiate at a wedding and a funeral. In both events, nigh supernatural events occur, and the veil's true nature begins to become unraveled. In a later conversation with his fiancee, Elizabeth, Mr. Hooper goes about explaining the reason for the veil, and its symbolism.
             In Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story, The Minister's Black Veil, there is much use of symbolism. In the story, a minister starts wearing a black veil one day and never takes it off. The townspeople are spooked and perturbed by the minister they once liked, even though the veil is just cloth over his face. People are afraid of him and beg him to remove the veil, but the minister is adamant and mysterious about the veil.
             I think that the veil symbolizes sin, which is in everybody. Everybody is sinful and has a secret sins, or "mysteries which we hide from our nearest and dearest, and would fain conceal from our own consciousness, even forgetting that the Omniscient can detect them"
             The Minister's Black Veil By Hawthorne is a captivating story. Hawthorne shows the reader about secret sin. He shows the reader that the people that seem to be perfect, are not what they seem to be. Hawthorne uses a variety of symbolism throughout the Minister's Black Veil. He uses symbolism with the color black, sin, secrets, and a black veil.
             Hawthorne uses the black veil as his main theme. A veil is worn when people are trying to cover their faces. A veil symbolizes a secret.
