blanca. Victor is presented as the archetypal hero- courageous and honorable whereas Louis is clothed in black- he appears the antagonist.
             The overall visual setup of the sequence has a mysterious and nostalgic air, shrouded in mist with low-key lighting and continuous use of close-up shots so that the audience is involved in the emotion and action of the unfolding events. The key characters- Illsa, Rick and Victor- wear coats and hats to add to the mystery. The body language of the cast gives added information to the audience. Rick is cloaked in shadow for most of the shots in which Victor is involved and his eyes are downcast, he appears brooding and smaller than Victor- perhaps symbolizing that he has lost to Victor and resigns himself to the loss of Illsa. He is not like Victor, the archetypal hero, and it is perhaps for this reason that we find it easier to relate to Rick and his challenges than to the seemingly perfect notion of Victor. However, in relation to Louis, Rick always stands before Illsa and Victor, as if protecting them (Still A4).
             The arrangement of shots is intimate and the use of eye-line matches and POV shots in conjunction with a series of juxtaposed reaction and reverse shots, creates the impression of a conversation taking place between the characters that the audience is involved in.
