In the article, "The Great Unwatched", by William Safire, located under the
Supplemental Readings section of the English Textbook, Connections, we are introduced to the
possibility of government control over unsuspecting Americans using hidden cameras. Safire
discusses the placement of hidden cameras, used by our government to monitor the unsuspecting,
unknowing American tourists, for the sake of the anti-terrorism movement. After reading this
article I was forced to ask myself, "Should our government be allowed to spy on its people and
Safire first notes how two of our very own past presidents used trickery to get what they
wanted and succeeded at doing so. In our time, we have to worry about the threat of terrorism
and the protection of our nation's capital, as well as national monuments. "But now, in the terror
of an external threat, our leaders are protecting our capital at the cost of every American's
personal freedom", states Safire. In response to the latest terror alert, Washington police opened
the S.O.C.C., or the Joint Operation Command Center of the Synchronized Operations
Command Complex. Inside this "Command Center", 50 officials are constantly monitoring a
wall of 40 surveillance monitors, showing the average, daily, American people visiting known
U.S. tourist sites. Safire refers to the American tourists as "The Great Unwatched", in past tense.
The American people, living their daily existence are now being monitored by hidden cameras.
The watchers can focus in on any un-suspecting face they choose.
These cameras and devices are linked to 200 other cameras located in our public schools.
