Bicentennial man

             Bicentennial Man, by Isaac Asimov, tells a story of a robot, who is somewhat different and slowly becomes a human after two hundred years of upgrades and modifications. Asimov's original collection of short stories are aimed to provide a positive angle on robots, when really in contrast, science fiction has them rebelling against human beings. When discussing this topic, we have to focus on the morality of robots and what characteristics really make a human, a human.
             In Bicentennial Man, I do not believe the robot deserves full moral consideration. Despite Asimov's three laws built into robots: 1. A robot may not injure a human, 2. A robot must obey human orders, and 3. A robot must protect his existence; I find it difficult to think a robot could be clever enough to fully understand these laws and have its own judgment. Robots who respond to a remote control are not moral subjects because they are the tools of whoever controls them. If your every move was programmed and your actions were carefully considered, then you are morally equivalent to a remote control robot.
             A variety of traits are considered important to the biological and cultural definition of human. Whether it deem language, consciousness or traits; there are many examples that are essential to be a human. For instance, the brain is the primary center for the regulation and control of our body's activities. If our brain did not interpret sensory impulses or transmit information to our muscles & body organs, how could we consider ourselves alive? To be alive is to have life, to be aware and full of activity. Another strong trait to be considered human would be language, the communication of thoughts and feelings through arbitrary gestures.
