Mercutio character analysis

             It is truly amazing to think about how great of a play writer Shakespeare was. He was a man who could take our lifestyles and translate them into a play on stage. He could make a character that was your best friend or a character that you despised. As he created brilliant characters, he also created some very unique relationships in his plays. One play of Shakespeare's that contained many strange relationships was Romeo and Juliet. One of the most interesting of these relationships is Romeo and Mercutio's. They were like brothers but yet they were exact opposites of one another. The friar and Romeo also enclose a very interesting relationship considering they converse like father and son. Juliet and the Nurse's relationship parallels Romeo's and the Friar's. I think it is important to examine these relationships in order to get a full view of the play.
             My favorite character in this play is Mercutio. He is the comedic force of this play. He has a quick wit and a very clever mind that seems to almost steal the scenes away from the other characters. Although his speeches contain many puns and jokes, he is not only a comedic character. He is the character that keeps this play from being a sappy love play. He attacks Romeo and Juliet's idea that love conquers everything. Mercutio later states that "If love be blind, love can not hit the mark." (Act II scene I, line 33). He yells this at Romeo when he goes to see Juliet after the Capulet party. He mocks Romeo's constant love problems. He is always in and out of love with some girl. Mercutio does not understand why Romeo feels this way about women and he constantly mocks him about his story book loves. Mercutio also doesn't believe in fate as most everyone else in the play does.
