Gay marriage

want to participate in the democratic process and convince state legislatures to apply some or all of the laws that were passed for husband-wife unions and their offspring to same-sex relationships as well, they have every right to do so. However, they do not have a right to sneak in through the back door, pretending to be somebody else, just by using the word marriage. (Escoffier, p.12)
The issue of gay rights exposes the hypocrisy of what was once the homosexuals' strongest argument, "that what consenting adults do in private is nobody else's business." (12-13) However, it seems like gay activists are trying to have it both ways. If it is none of a person's business what they do, then it is none of their business what people think about it. Nor should people be forced to recognize it in word or deed. Emotional stress of how much homosexual relationships mean to those involved are relevant only to those people themselves, who are free to make whatever relationships they wish with one another, and to solemnize their relationship in whatever ceremony they prefer. (14) But that is very different from trying to drag the rest of us into this, through laws which our elected representatives, as a whole, never agreed to apply to them. Now, it is suddenly everybody else's business to recognize these issues and to counsel on them all the legal claims created for others. (14)
