"The Crucible" gives away a portrait of a small and rustic village, which is Salem. It quite makes everyone to think that peace always at this place, but that is completely out of what actually took place and happened. Many trials about witchcraft occurred and were not entirely solved with appropriate decisions. Throughout the play, John Proctor is the only character who has been paid less attention than the other but he was the key and a hidden fact that author Miller wants to give to the readers. This man, he is not entirely perfect or a hero but him and his heroic thought make us realize the importance of being human and having identity. Proctor as well showed different interactions toward to other people which reflect various personalities.
At the beginning, "the Crucible" introduced John Proctor as a hard-working farmer and physically strong. Elizabeth, Proctor's companion, seems to be a faithful and obedient person who never left the home or did anything against her husband. Back to Proctor, his situation is not easily understood. "He is a sinner who against the moral fashion of that time, and also against his own vision of decent conduct." As author Miller indicated that Proctor was respected and even feared in Salem because his sin particularly and his figure of a confident man. During this time of the play, it is hard to realize the expression that John Proctor does. The relationship between Proctor and Abigail William was seen as sin and especially Proctor himself reduced his own reputation and made the reader to mislead themselves to another John Proctor who somehow committed adultery. This fact was noticed when Hale requested him to state the tenth commandments which every religious men have to remember, and he mistakenly missed one which was the commandment of adultery.
