There are many reasons why an athlete may feel extreme pressure, such as; popularity, competition with in their sport, the pressure of being a good role model, and basically being the best, which may cause them to think about taking drugs to enhance their performance. In some cases an athlete may know of a small competitive handicap that he/she may have, and they do not know of anything else to turn to but drugs. A small competitive handicap such as one athlete being faster than the other or a certain part of their performance that the athlete is lacking in, may definitely make the athlete feel like turning towards drugs. The feeling of knowing a certain part of your performance is lacking and you can turn to nothing other then practice 24/7 is disappointing. So they would rather take the easy way out by taking performance enhancing drugs. It does not help much when that athlete with the small competitive handicap sees another athlete taking performance-enhancing drugs, and is not getting caught taking them. Not only does the athlete know that another athlete is taking drugs to enhance their performance, but the athlete also knows that now his/her chance of being the best without also taking drugs is slim to none, especially if that athlete also feels that doubt and extreme pressure.
