The story began in 1898. It took place in Tsavo, Africa. This was the time when America, Germans and French were fighting over Africa. The Americans point was to save Africa from the Africans and end slavery. During this time a bridge was being built over the Tsavo River. They had Africans and Indians working together to get it done. The problem was the workers didn't like each other. The Africans hated the Indians and the Indians hated other Indians. It was hard for things to get done with people having different beliefs. The Hindu's found cows sacred and the Muslim would eat the cows. Then came a time when they all got together. When the attacks were happening they were all fleeing. They were trying to help one another escape from the horror. At one point they all got together, left the assignment of building the bridge, hopped on a train, and headed far away.
Nobody would listen to Colonel Paterson and help him out to get rid of the lions so the job could get done. No one believed he could kill them off and make them safe. To them it was believed he could do anything because he was 'white,' even to find out later he could not do it on his own. Everyone deserted the Colonel and whoever else couldn't leave or wouldn't leave. The problem here is that nobody had faith and nobody could get a long. If everyone would have put forth some effort and been brave it could have gotten done so much quicker and easier.
This shows that you need to have courage. People need to start trusting in one another and working together. In the end the lions were killed and the bridge was made. If no one would have come back then the bridge would not have gotten finished. When they realized their biggest fear was gone they all went back and worked together to get it done.
