How is the theme of imprisonment presented in the 1984?

             Imprisonment has been a key issue in many novels, showing the disastrous effects of oppression. George Orwell's 1984 shows the theme of imprisonment through various uses of technology, and government structure and policies. Orwell believed that the communist state of USSR had a negative impact on people's lives, though thought otherwise by widespread belief. Winston Smith, the protagonist, shared the same thoughts as Orwell and experienced the life of a commoner in a totalitarian society, imprisoned in every possible way. In Ibsen's Ghosts, we see how the environment and setting of a country house in Norway plays a major role in the characters' lives. Eventually, it brings about harm and grief to the characters. In these two pieces, the theme of imprisonment is a major one, and affects the characters physically and mentally.
             The ruling body plays a major role in imprisoning characters in all ways. In Orwell's 1984, The Party, the ruling power, does anything and everything to ensure that they are in power. The Party limits the rights of every person to the minimum. Winston follows a monotonous daily routine, starting with a daily exercise, strenuous work, and an insufficient rest at night. The Party affects characters' physically, reforming their mind to make them appreciate Big Brother, the non-existent leader of The Party. With Winston, "He felt very cold, he was shaking uncontrollably, his teeth were chattering, the tears were rolling down his cheeks," when he was caught by the police. His physical torture was extreme, but effective, and in the end he was a new person, appreciating everything that Big Brother stood for. The Party carefully watched the whole population, holding them on a tight leash using many devices to imprison them.
