All summer in a day

Edgar Allen Poe developed ten principles that apply to short stories. In the story All Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury, these principles are shown throughout the story. The story is about a young girl who is living in a society from Earth on Venus. Venus has one hour of summer every 7 years and the young girl, Margot, has been deprived of it because the other children in the story lock her in a closet to keep her from it. At least five of Poe's principles are shown in this story.
A short story may only produce one effect on the reader. For example, a reader cannot be torn between the feeling of joy and the feeling of sadness at the end of a short story. In All Summer in a Day, Margot is locked in a closet, and she cannot experience the sun that she's been longing for since she first came to live on Venus. The children in her class trap her in a closet because they think Margot acts as if she is better than everyone else because she came to Venus after the other children and remembers the sun better than them. This creates the feeling of sadness for the reader, they feel bad for Margot who is now locked in a closet and missing the one hour of sunlight that she has been waiting for since she arrived on Venus.

This story grabs the attention of the reader because the way Margot is treated makes a reader want to find out what happens. If a story is more suspenseful, the attention of the reader will be held longer, and more likely in one sitting. For example, questions like "what happens to Margot?" and "Will Margot get to enjoy the sunlight she has been longing for so long?" get a reader to the end of a story. Without the suspense in All Summer in a Day of Margot being locked in the closet, the story would be dull and not as inter...
