The early additions of Macon's travel guides offer his readers the most American style foods, restaurants and hotels where they can feel as much at home as possible. "I am happy to say that it's possible now to buy Kentucky Fried Chicken in Stockholm, Pita bread too"[p13]. Not only does Macon avoid foreign foods and hotels, Macon avoids people and all foreign cultural experiences. When Macon travels to a country, he goes with the mindset that he does not belong and that no one will be excepting anything of him, which causes him and his readers to shut out everyone and everything around them. "Always bring a book, as protection against strangers...newspapers from elsewhere will remind you you don't belong" [p31]. Macon tells his readers to do everything possible to avoid contact with strangers and any awkwardness. This is because when Macon is faced with a new and strange situation, he does not know how to handle it, which is one of the reasons he is unable to accept change in his life.
