The Power of Presentation

             Imagine sitting at the computer while doing a day's work. All of a sudden a meeting is called, thinking "Great nap time" a line trudges to the conference room. Only in place of 30 balding men in the same grey suit, there is music and color and people are smiling all around. Recognize this? Probably not, most of the business world view meetings as a dull, drab necessity that cannot be avoided and most people involved are only half there themselves. All over the world companies both big and small are asking, "What can we do to improve? What is missing?" When looking at a typical meeting environment, there is the speaker, generally the owner, manager, or someone in a managerial position, and the audience or employees. These types of meetings are generally done with the speaker standing and the listeners sitting at the round or rectangular tables. How does a company avoid the pull of boredom? A little help from a small formula that could be called the four P's, Purpose, Plan, Practice and Present, can help to avoid the boredom syndrome (Tools for Teams p. 94).
             Purpose is the first P. One might ask, "What does this mean?" The purpose is exactly that or more simply stated the "why" of a presentation. What needs to be accomplished by the presenter? This is the time to figure out the highlights and main points of a presentation. This is also the place to decide on the subject matter and what is to be accomplished by educating or informing the audience and also whether the information will be presented to the public or a particular group. For example, a presenter traveling to a cosmetology trade show would not expect to be well received presenting the stages of a butterfly's life cycle; he would expect to be presenting a new product or enhancements to established and trusted product.
