Familial ALS is hereditary and is passed on by a dominant gene and accounts for approximately 10% of ALS cases. This occurs when there is 2 or more cases in the same bloodline. The third type of ALS is call Guamian and is related to the high incidence of ALS on the island of Guam (Damiano et al 1999).
